About Us Pittsburgh Web Development
Picture of 400lb.at the ballpark!

We've been around in some way or another for more than a decade. Since 2003, 400lb.communications has been providing unique marketing solutions to a growing list of local (Pittsburgh, PA), national and international clients.

400lb.timeline

1997. Nathan Kress, age 25, registers URL www.400lb.com for personal design portfolio site to showcase work in the hopes of leaving career as a pizza cook.

1998. Kress joins staff of Sladekutter, Ltd. as a copywriter. Eventually rising to heretofore unimagined heights of Associate Creative Director.

2000. Mullen Advertising calls and, ladies and gentlemen meeet the new Creative Director of Mullen's Interactive Department.

Future 400lb.collaborators Ted Williams, Nick Cobler, Molly Smoller, Brian Krummel all come on board the Mullen bandwagon. Hilarity ensues.

2004. Kress leaves Mullen to give 400lb.com a go full-time.

Bradford Schools signs on as a major client, handing over design work for 11 schools scattered about the country. An air of legitimacy wafts from the Mac G4 (blue and clear, baby!) tower that makes up 400lb.communication's IT infrastructure.

2004. Programmer Clinton Godlesky joins the team on a freelance basis. In addition to CSS, PHP and general code wizardry, assumes duties of playing fetch with office golden retriever, Audrey.

Industry awards roll in as 400lb.work is featured graphic design:usa, Creativity hardcover as well as local AIGA design recognition.

2005. Clinton Godlesky takes time away from his passion to pursue a full-time position with 400lb.

2006. Office Space! Not the movie (but we love that, too). Real life space in the heart of the Aspinwall neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Highmark joins the client ranks as we produce a secure website for PA docs to apply for grant money - as well as the company's 2006 Community Report.

2007. Molly Smoller joins the crew, offering marketing strategy, search engine optimization experience and a love for space heaters.

2008. Caulen and Rebecca join as a programmer and designer, respectively. New clients like StartingGate, PPG, and many others keep us busy. Jay lends his strategy and branding talents. Gas prices rise. All purely coincidental.

OK, what's with the name?

Believe me, had I known how many times I'd have to retell the (admittedly lame) story, I would've picked a safer name. I shudder to think how employees at Wongdoody must dread the question.

Anyway, here's the story:

Early morning, 1997. Picture a young, impressionable designer settling down to catch the Dennis Miller Show on HBO. Note to the kids at home: this is the Dennis Miller before he became an arch-conservative, right wing crazy. Fast forward to the credits: Directed by ... , Best Boy ..., then *wait for it* 400lb.gorilla / Dennis Miller. Young designer finds it clever. Quickly registers URL. The rest, history.
